ADULT EDUCATION WITH BETH PHILLIPS
|
DATE: THIS SUNDAY, July 25th at 9:00am
in the Rowland Davis Hall
The Rev. Beth Phillips has put together a unique class which deep dives into the power of art and Christianity (see description below). If you usually come to the 8:00am service, stay late, and if you are a 10:00er, come early!
Visual art can be powerful, and it has been influential in the development of Christianity. An image provides insight into how social, economic, cultural and political factors influence how Christians understand their faith and theology at different points in time and contexts. We often think of theology as static and unchanging. However, context influences our understanding and is reflected in religious images, and similarly, religious images often influence our understanding. In this presentation, we will examine how the cross has been depicted in images throughout history. This was the core of Rev. Beth Phillips’ thesis while at Camrbidge University with Professor Eamon Duffy, often seen on the BBC as the consulting expert for Christian Art. Come see what these vastly different images can tell us about the community in which they were created and the Divine.
The Rev. Beth Phillips will continue the ongoing conversation about Renewal – our souls, ourselves, Christ Church, the Episcopal Church, the Universal Church, and what is next.
